Music Performance Assessment

MPA stands for Music Performance Assessment. These are sanctioned outlets for quality feedback on a variety of musical formats. Each district of the Florida Vocal Association presents two MPA events per year: Solo and Ensemble MPA and Choral MPA. At Choral MPA, all choirs perform 2–3 memorized pieces, for a panel of adjudicators. After the performance (at district MPA), the choirs will sight-read a short selection of music for another judge. Both the performance and sight-reading are rated on a rubric, with five possible ratings. These ratings have an equivalent title:

1 – Superior (may be earned with Distinction at certain levels)
2 – Excellent
3 – Good
4 – Fair
5 – Poor

The purpose of this adjudication is to assess student learning in the choral classroom. Participation in MPA is required of all WHS choral students. Western’s choruses have an outstanding record at MPAs and we hope to continue the tradition of fine choral singing and sight-reading.
