I’ve been using Slack with WHS officers all year and it’s very easy
Everyone needs an automatic invite to be added. To get an invite go to: https://westernchorus.com/nycslack and enter personal email address, invite will be emailed. Create username (up to 21 characters) as follows. Super long names can be abbreviated:
- Students & Teachers: firstnamelastname-school e.g. johnsmith-cshs
- Chaperones: firstnamelastname-chap-school e.g. suziesmith-chap-cshs
Everyone on the team can be in an any number of channels, basically message rooms. They start with “#” unless they are private – like the directors channel.
When someone creates an account they are automatically put in #announcements channel, for messages from directors only. (Only the 5 directors can send messages to #announcements)
You can put them in other channels by using channel settings in the menu.

When a student creates account, they will be put in #announcements. Tell them to join #nyc2016 (just click on it) and your school channel e.g. #cypressbay #monarch #coralsprings …Or you can force them into those channels yourself by Adding them. When chaperones join, tell them to join #nyc2016 and then add them to the staff channels below.
Below I am adding philhalladay-mhs to the allstaff room. You can do the same thing to add kids to your school room or they can do it themselves. Go to channel details NOT invites. (Invites are to invite someone to create a whole new account, not put them in a channel)

OTHER useful things
- if a message starts with @channel it will notify everyone in that channel, i.e. make their phone ding
- e.g. in #western…. @channel Wake up, it’s 5 AM!
- if a message starts with @everyone it will notify everyone on the whole system, i.e. make their phone ding, this only works in #announcements
- e.g. in #announcements… @everyone It’s Friday morning! Don’t miss your plane!
